To start up a regional information network, it is essential to have an inventory
of the means and research structures of each country involved. At the beginning
of the project, it was therefore decided to define as a priority the constitution of a
database that would include the description of national Institutions involved in
scientific activities concerning fisheries. This database describes their
main areas of activity, the investigation projects and results
obtained, their staff, the material means and experiences in national
and international co-operation (scientific networks). This information
allows, among other aspects, to optimise the use of the available means and to
co-ordinate the research activities through:
- the identification of the existing experts in the different scientific Institutions of each country, including the Universities,
- the knowledge of the strengths of each country as far as the different fishing research specialities are concerned,
- the identification of the most urgent needs in terms of training,
- the improvement of collaboration : development of mono and multidisciplinary working parties to allow to tackle jointly programs of common interest,
- the joint use of experiences and results already achieved,
- the improvement of national information systems.
