Inventory of the Western Mediterranean research means in fisheries management science

Table of Contents

 Recommendations Top

To start up a regional information network, it is essential to have an inventory of the means and research structures of each country involved. At the beginning of the project, it was therefore decided to define as a priority the constitution of a database that would include the description of national Institutions involved in scientific activities concerning fisheries. This database describes their main areas of activity, the investigation projects and results obtained, their staff, the material means and experiences in national and international co-operation (scientific networks).
This information allows, among other aspects, to optimise the use of the available means and to co-ordinate the research activities through:

  • the identification of the existing experts in the different scientific Institutions of each country, including the Universities,
  • the knowledge of the strengths of each country as far as the different fishing research specialities are concerned,
  • the identification of the most urgent needs in terms of training,
  • the improvement of collaboration : development of mono and multidisciplinary working parties to allow to tackle jointly programs of common interest,
  • the joint use of experiences and results already achieved,
  • the improvement of national information systems.

Here we present the different entities and relations of the conceptual data model and the associated data dictionary. This model is a generalisation of the model developed by the ICRAM/FAO ITAFISH Project to a regional and multi-language context:

 Tools Top

COPEMED Project has developed, in order to assist the countries in the data collection, management and publication, the following products in collaboration with the national focal points :
  • Entry forms, with the corresponding instructions to fill them up
  • a computerized application for WINDOWS 95, available in 3 editions targetting 3 different user's profiles:
    • Regional Consultation Edition: it allows to display the data. It has tools for filtering the data and for reports, statistics and mailing production.
    • National Administrator Edition: it allows as well to add and modify data
    • Regional Administrator Edition: it includes tools to aggregate national data sets and a procedure for automatic publication on the Project WEB site.

The application can be used in the 3 Project official languages (English, French and Spanish) and the programming technology used easily allows the addition of a new language.

The Regional Consultation edition(version 2.1, December 2000) can be downloaded from this WEB site to consult the last publication of the regional database.

There are to ways to consult these data:

  • directly in our Web site: we present for each country a description of the institutions and the list of their experts, stating the domain of their specialization (Link Countries Participants in the opening page of the site).

Collaboration with our Regional Network Menu

Any person, institution, scientific network or project interested to be included in our network on the fisheries research resources of the Mediterranean region can complete the corresponding forms and send them to the National Focal Point of their countries, or to COPEMED headquarters.
